So! You’re starting a new year and writing down your goals! It all feels so exciting and real, right? You’re full of hope and inspiration to make it all happen this year! I know this because I totally have the same feeling every January.
However, life gets in the way and by the time the next December has come, I often find my January goals have been mostly forgotten.
The thing is, just writing them down isn’t really enough. You have to build an action plan and make little steps towards your goals each day. That’s why, today, we’ll be talking about all of this and more! Including spread inspirations about goals for your Bullet Journal.
Why You Should Use Bullet Journal For Goal Setting
Your Bullet Journal is the perfect place for you to work on your goals. Even though there are many digital tools to help you out, there is a special kind of magic in using paper.
Here are a few main reasons I found during my Bullet Journal adventures.
Writing has special power over our brains. According to Forbes if you vividly picture the goals you want to achieve, you’re anywhere from 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to make them happen.
So, if you just spend some time with your Bullet Journal working to figure out exactly what your goals are, you will already be more likely to achieve them.
Bullet Journal also allows you to have your goals in your mind all the time. You can include them in your monthly, weekly and daily spreads, therefore ensuring that you keep making the little steps towards the big success.
How To Choose Your Goals
The first step is to decide what your goals should be, which is actually one of the hardest ones if you ask me.
There are tons of examples all around the Internet and you probably hear lots of goals and resolutions from your coworkers and family.
It really is very tempting to just go with some of their ideas. After all, who doesn’t want to eat healthier, work out more and read more books?
But that’s a total trap! If you set goals which you don’t REALLY want to achieve for yourself, you’re more likely to drop them eventually. Your goals have to be only yours, so spend some time contemplating and figuring out what it is you really want from yourself and your life.
Here are a few questions you might want to ask yourself to help you find the right mind track to figuring out your own goals. I know this may sound like a pretty cumbersome process, but it’s absolutely worth it!
- What are my values and strengths?
- What do I want my life to look like?
- What would I do if money wasn’t an issue?
- What have I been meaning to do, but people around me say it’s too big of a thing for me to accomplish?
How To Formulate Effective Goals
When you have an idea, it’s probably time to formulate it. To make sure you achieve the goal, you have to take care on how you set it. Here are a few more popular techniques.
Rapid Planning Method
This is a method by Tony Robbins and RPM stands for:
- R: Results-oriented
- P: Purpose-driven
- M: Massive Action Plan
Following this method, ask yourself these questions:
- What do I really want? (result)
- Why do I really want it? (purpose)
- What is my massive action plan?
This should put you in the right mindset and help you figure out your real goals and intentions, so you’ll be ready to start on your action plan motivated and excited.
Another very popular goal-setting technique is SMART. This method has been around for a very long time and for a good reason – it works!
According to this technique, your goals should be:
- S: Specific (or significant)
- M: Measurable (or meaningful)
- A: Attainable (or action-oriented)
- R: Relevant (or rewarding)
- T: Time-bound (or trackable)
Level 10 Life
According to this system, you divide your life by 10 spheres and you evaluate each one from 1 to ten. Once you gave this enough thought, you start setting goals thinking on what is it you need to do to get 10 points in each area.

This is a way I usually set my goals and it’s really pretty simple.
When I sit down to do my yearly goals I’m doing mostly a vision board where I think about where I want to be by the end of the year, what are some things I want to have happened. Just so I have a picture of what I’m stiving for.
But when it comes to exact goals – I set them by quarter. This way I can spend a quarter concentrating on one important goal.
Plus it’s actually easier that way since the goal is smaller and easier to achieve. Plus I only have a small limited amount of time and I have to push through to make it happen.

What To Ask Yourself When Setting Your Goals

Now that you’re ready to work through the goals, here are a few questions you should ask yourself.
Why do I want that?
Your why is the key to staying on track and eventually achieving your goals. As long as you know why you’ll be able to power through all the difficulties you’ll meet on your way.
By asking yourself this question you’ll also be able to test if it’s really your goal or if it’s really something you really really want.
What do I need to do to achieve it?
Time to think of an outline of your action plan. Divide your goal into small actionable steps and better yet – assign a certain date to each one of them!
If you have a plan and you put yourself on the deadline you’ll be more likely to achieve it since it’s not just a huge unattainable goal anymore, but instead, simple steps you already have scheduled.
What can stop me?
Now that you know what to do, it’s time to work through the challenges you might face. Think of all the things that can go wrong and stand on your way.
Next, think of ways you can deal with them. When trouble comes and you’re already prepared to deal with it, it honestly won’t be so scary and difficult. Use this step to build your confidence.
What if ….
When setting goals, especially very ambitious ones, it’s easy to get paralyzed by fear. Spend some time working through it.
First, think of what happens if you fail. No, your friends and family won’t judge you and it won’t be the end of the world. It will be a good lesson and a lot of practice, so you know what to do next and how to be better.
Secondly, think about what you get if you actually achieve it. And I mean really think about it, in detail. How will you feel, how will your life change? Isn’t it worth the risk?!
Tips For Achieving Goals
By now you probably have your goals all set and your action plan ready, so here are a few final tips I wanted to share with you.
- Create a vision board and preferably leave it somewhere where you can see it every day. This is a great motivation and it will help you to stay in focus.
- Get support from people. When your loved ones believe in you and support your goals, it’s really an extra push to stay accountable and make sure to follow through.
- Commit to a schedule. Having a schedule will keep you organized and make sure you do something every day towards achieving your goals.
- Set realistic goals. Your goals have to scare and challenge you in their dreaminess, however, they still must be realistic and attainable. If it all turned out to be too easy and was achieved in a few months – good! just set a new goal, maybe a more difficult one this time.
- Track your progress. This is a crucial step! By tracking your progress you not only remind yourself of your focus and stay enthusiastic, but you also learn if your action plan works or if it needs some tweaking.
- Celebrate little wins. Finally, make sure you give yourself credit for achieving milestones on your way to the big goal. This will bring a new-found enthusiasm to your journey and definitely will make it much more fun.

I really like this cute minimalistic look. There are just a few goals here, but it means they really stand out so you can clearly see what to concentrate on.
I also love the goals themselves and how they are oriented toward being a better person and kinder to yourself.
Love how well structured this goals spread is.
I think it’s very important to include a why to your goals pages, so you always know what’s the reason behind your hard work, as well as can check if this why is still something you want.
And of course, there is no achieving goals without a step-by-step plan and this spread helps with that as well.
I think it’s so great how this spread includes both goals and a step-by-step plan, as well as a level 10 life evaluation.
In just one spread there is so much covered! This is more like a development plan for the upcoming year and I love it.
Another goals page that seems a lot like level 10 life.
Here she didn’t really evaluate each area, but she made sure to set at least one goal for every important area of her life. i love the balance this creates.
Really cool spread and a nice way to divide your goals.
I actually also like to separate goals from habits, it helps me to create a full list of habits to work on as I go. And that way I kind of divide factual goals from more general personal development and self-love goals.
Dividing your goals by category is very productive. It makes it clear what areas of life you want to concentrate on in the upcoming year.
Another thing I like about this spread is that each area has just a few goals, which is very important. Write too many and you’ll start feeling overwhelmed and might forget about it altogether. But have a few and they will keep you concentrated.
How cute is this page? I love the little flower and the black and white colors, looks so classy.
You can see a pattern among the goals pages – to divide into areas and set a few goals in each.
I want to note here how well different fonts played for this page, with big block letters for the areas and cursive for the goals themselves.
Such a beautiful and bright goals page! I honestly feel motivated just looking at it. It’s great that she added a little quote here to stay in the positive spirit and ready to fight another day.
Obviously here she only set fitness goals, but she is straight to the point with exact steps to take – definitely a key to success.
Beautiful minimalistic spread, I really lime that kind of style for the goals page, keeping it all straight to the point.
The cool thing about this page is that each area is color-coded, which makes it so much easier for your eyes to work with.
I really really love these cute little cacti. They are of course purely decorative here but don’t they add so much cuteness to this page.
Also must love that motivational quote. I’m always up for something uplifting, especially on the goals page.

This is my goals page before the pen. As you can see I went with a pretty basic design, just added a few doodles so I can see the different categories better.
It’s always useful to add an action plan and purpose, to be sure I’m working towards all the right things.
Hayley’s pages are always perfect, just a little bit of color and illustrations and a lot of perfect lettering.
Really admire the structure she used to organize the goals as well.
Perfect goals spread straight to the point. We have all the important categories and enough space to write a few goals for each.
What I really like is that she used brush pens to add some more interest to the lines, such a cool effect. if you decide to do something similar – definitely go for some light colors, like from the greyscale set of Tombow Dual Brush Pens.
I’m so in love with this goals page! Just check out how perfect this handwriting is.

An amazing thing about this goals spread – there is a section for obstacles! When you know what hardships expect you and prepare some possible solutions it’s much easier to follow through with your goals.
Cute and simple goals spread with a few main goals stated. I love how the goals are so very oriented on just building a better life and better self.

Very straight to the point and direct goals and I’m really loving how each has its own little shape and different color.

Yes on this page we only see 4 goals, but they are very clear and looking so good!
I think this is more of a bucket list than a goals page, but it still counts!
You can go differently with this spread, based on what you want to do before the end of the year, or maybe what you want to do before you turn a certain age.

This is the monthly goals page so here you write a little smaller goals with steps to take during the month.
Love these cute little fans Cam used to decorate this monthly goals page.
It gives just enough space to write 2-3 main goals for the month and all the steps you need to make to achieve them.
First of of all – I absolutely love this collage on the left side – so creative!
The goals page is very unusual as well with that scale to measure your goals progress – love the idea!
I’m not sure where exactly you’re supposed to write the goals themselves, but this is such an amazing motivational page.
I’m really loving the grey shadows and general monochrome vibe of the page especially compares to the bright colored flowers on the photo.
I really like the idea of dividing your goals with geometrical shapes, I feel like that way it’s much more clear and easier to understand.
On this spread, she chose circles and since it’s a two-page spread it really allows enough space for all the goals, as well as those pretty flowers.
One of my favorite way to set my goals is by creating a mind map.
When I set my goals I’m trying to be more generic rather than set exact goals. the mind map format helps me to clarify goals for myself and also organize it all in a very comprehensive and easy to understand manner.
That looks like a fun and huge plan for 2018!
I love that all the goals are divided from each other, and illustrations really help you to work with all the information here. To be honest this looks more like a vision board to me.
Cute little monthly goals spread and I’m really loving how it’s all organized and divided by categories.
I especially find it so creative to set family goals with this little drawing of a plant.
Every goal with a little action plan – this is the way to success with your goals!
I also really love that there is a little section for tips. It’s not something I’ve ever seen in other goals pages but I think it’s very useful.
The idea of dividing goals into months is very clever – it’s like when setting your yearly goals you already build a plan for what will be your priority each month.
The important thing here is to leave yourself some space. We all know life happens and sometimes plans change, so if your year didn’t follow exactly your plan – that’s ok.
Loving the vintage look of this page and the beautiful handwriting.
I don’t think I can read everything it says, but I’m sure the author can and it does look absolutely stunning and so unique.
