Word of the year is a pretty common practice, especially among the Bullet Journal community. I tried this practice in 2018 and let me tell you, it’s amazing what a strong impact one word can have!

I’m here to share with you this practice, and tell you how it can help you and how to choose your own perfect word. Plus, I’ll give you tons of ideas for words you can use!

What is “Word of the Year”

Word of the year is a practice that helps you to set intentions for the upcoming year with just one word.

Your yearly goals and resolutions can change, become irrelevant, or simply be forgotten after the first month. The word of the year, however, is a more flexible practice that will stay with you throughout the whole year as a gentle reminder of your focus.

Whenever you’re in doubt or struggling (for example when you feel like your goals don’t work anymore and you are thinking about changing them), your word of the year will be your compass and it’ll show you the right direction.

For example, my word of the year for 2019 was “success”. I started the year with a hobby blog project and no full-time job, so my word was my direction – to build my life into a success.

In 2019 I got an amazing job, grew my blog to a full-time income, moved to another country and happily work from home.

My word of the year helped me to keep my priorities straight and stay on track with my goals. Every time I had a low moment and felt like throwing it all out of the window, I looked at my word and remembered that success means a lot of hard work and failure.

So I persevered.

Choosing the word of the year is a very individual process, so make sure you go through it and choose something that really fits you. That way you’ll be able to harvest the complete power of this practice.

How To Choose The Word Of The Year

Choosing the word of the year requires some inspiration and analysis. Before you sit down to do that, I’d recommend you to first review the year and set goals for the upcoming year, This will help you a lot!

Write down your goals and analyze them. Focus on trends and see what are the priorities. For example, if you have more goals for your health, maybe look for the word in this area.

Once you’re done with those, half the work is done! Having all of these things in mind, sit, and ask yourself these questions:

  • What is your number 1 priority for the upcoming year
  • What did you love about the last year
  • What would you like to change about the last year
  • What do you want to have more in your life
  • How do you want to feel about the upcoming year once it’s done
  • What are some things you love and passionate about
  • What are some things you should let go of
  • What would you like to change about yourself in the upcoming year

Answering these questions should already give you some direction on what kind of words you’re looking for. I have a few more tips for you.

Look For Inspirations

By now you should have an idea of the word, so just look for inspiration. Think of your favorite book quotes or check Pinterest for related quotes.

Check out what you found and try to pick some words that stand out to you. Add them to the list to think over later.

Create a Vision Board

This might be a bit too much, but it’s a very useful exercise not just in helping you find the word of the year, but generally in helping you manifest the future you want for yourself.

Get a stack of old magazines, a glue stick, and a piece of paper and get creative. Cut out the images, words, and quotes that speak to you and align with your perfect life vision.

You might find the word among the board, or it can just help you get a better understanding of what you want your word to be.

If you need some help creating one be sure to check my blog post How To Create A Vision Board In Your Bullet Journal.

Narrow Down Your List

By now you should have a list of different ideas for your word of the year, so let’s start narrowing it down. Look at it again and see if some of them might be excluded already.

Next, try to write affirmations around each word, to see how it really fits you and your goals.

For example, if your word of the year is “success”, you might have affirmations like:

  • I have the knowledge to make smart decisions for myself
  • I create the life I want and enjoy
  • I believe I саn dо anything

Do these speak to you? Then this might be a good word. Test all the words on your list until you find the one that licks for you.
